Canadian PM to visit massive wildfire location under growing criticism

It’s been one week since a massive wildfire forced tens of thousands of Canadians from their homes. The fire is still burning out of control and it could be several weeks before any evacuees are allowed to return.

The Canadian government has pledged full federal support but the fire is proving to be Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first major test.

CCTV America’s Roee Ruttenberg reports.

While Trudeau has promised to come to the location of the fire, some are saying that’s not soon enough.

Tens of thousands are now living in shelters or scattered across the province.

“He should be here to support fellow Canadians in our time of need. He went above and beyond for Syrian refugees. And I think he should do the same efforts for us,” Kim Crant, a Fort McMurray evacuee said.

The centrist leader is also facing criticism for rejecting offers from the US, Russia and other countries to help fight the fire insisting Canadians can handle the blaze on their own.

Even Trudeau’s announcement early on, that his government would match dollar for dollar all donations made to the Canadian Red Cross, has met criticism with some asking what about the other charities needing support.
