British PM causes social media stir over Nigerian corruption comments

Comments made by British Prime Minister David Cameron about corruption in Nigeria and Afghanistan have caused major controversy.

CCTV’s Kathryn Ogunde checked social media for reactions and what people in Nigeria are saying.

It is no secret Nigeria has been grappling with corruption. It was one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign strategies and since he has been in office, numerous government officials have been sacked as a result of his apparent no tolerance approach to corruption and fraud.

But it would seem Nigeria’s notorious reputation has stuck.

The social media reaction to the comments has been varying. Most users feel David Cameron put his foot in his mouth, while other users point out the hypocrisies in both the U.K. and Nigeria.

Another tweet cited a 2015 report by Transparency International that ranked Nigeria not on top of the corruption list but as 136 most corrupt out of 167 countries meaning Nigeria is the 31 most corrupt nations in the world.

In fact according to the anti-corruption index North Korea and Somalia are the most corrupt nations in the world followed by Afghanistan.
