Shootings and murders on the rise in Chicago

Chicago, the third largest city in the United States saw more than 50 people were shot last weekend.

The city has a new nickname — ‘Chi-raq’ a nod to the war-torn country of Iraq.

Data compiled by the Chicago Tribune show the city has already seen more than 1,200 victims shot by guns this year, compared to nearly 3,000 for all of 2015.

Chicago Police figures also show a dramatic rise in city murders in the first quarter of this year, jumping as much as 126 percent in February alone.
