Kenyan government threatens to close world's largest refugee camp 2

The Kenyan government is threatening to shut down the Dadaab refugee camp, where thousands of Somali refugees lived due to security concerns.

CCTV’s Kathryn Ogunde traveled to Dadaab where she talked to one refugee family.

In 2013 the Kenyan government made a deal with the U.N. and the Somali government to repatriate those refugees who wanted to go home.

Kenya claimed a large area of southern Somalia was safe from Al Qaeda’s linked group Al Shabab.

“Somalia is still not safe. Those who can walk around and say they are safe are government officials. We civilians are not safe,” Mahamad Noor, a refugee who does not want to go back to Somalia said.

Some refugees in Dadaab said they didn’t want to go back to Somalia, but instead wanted western countries to take them in.

The government has yet to provide any clear evidence to support the claims that Dadaab harbours terrorists.
