George Takei

George Takei is one of the few Asian-Americans to make it in Hollywood during the late 1950s. He gained worldwide notoriety for his portrayal of Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise in the acclaimed 1960s American sci-fi television series “Star Trek,” along with the show’s first six feature films.

With his signature voice and signature wit, the sci-fi icon has appeared in more than 40 feature films and countless television roles during an acting career spanning five decades. In addition, he’s an author, director, activist and, in recent years, a social media mega-star.

Takei has also won numerous awards and accolades for his human rights advocacy and his efforts to bring attention to a very dark period in American history — the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

CCTV America’s Mike Walter spoke with Takei about his remarkable journey and new YouTube show and heard his thoughts on some of today’s most controversial headlines, including the issue of whitewashing and yellow face in Hollywood.
