An interview with Secretary General of the OAS Luis Almagro

Americas Now

The South American country of Venezuela has reached a crisis point and become one of the most perilous places to live. Severe shortages of food, medicine and electricity have taken their toll on this nation of 30 million, placing them in dangerous and often life-threatening situations on a daily basis.

International leaders have been cautious to speak out about Venezuela’s economic and political turmoil. Many are encouraging a dialogue within the country over foreign intervention.

Recently, the leader of one of the oldest, international organizations to promote peace and protect rights in the Americas has taken a public stand on Venezuela. He is Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States. He describes the conditions in Venezuela as “grave.”  He cites humanitarian violations and has called for an emergency meeting among the organization’s member states.

“Americas Now” anchor Elaine Reyes had the chance to sit down with Luis Almagro and ask him about Venezuela and some other topics.
