Construction work linking the final segment of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the world’s longest cross-sea bridge, was completed early on Wednesday in Zhuhai City of south China’s Guangdong Province.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority made the announcement of the successful completion at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday after performing tests of the bridge’s road structure.

A transport ship had delivered the last segment of the steel box girder to the construction area on Tuesday afternoon.

The work to lift the final steel structure into place began at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday and continued through the night.

“The welds on both sides of the final closure can be no more than two centimeters after the girder was hoisted up, which required us to carry out precise predictions and measurements about the surrounding temperatures and temperature errors in the construction process,” said Jing Qiang, deputy director of the Construction Management Office of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority.

The 50-kilometer long (31 miles) bridge, which connects the southern economic hub of Guangdong Province to the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, will be the world’s longest sea bridge once completed.
