Disarmament deal declared in Colombian peace talks

A ceasefire agreement has been reached between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Army of Colombia (FARC). The accord which calls for laying down arms was announced June 23rd and signifies a breakthrough in the peace talks.

“Americas Now” anchor Elaine Reyes is joined in the studio with CCTV Political Analyst Laura Carlsen to discuss the deal and its ramifications.

The Colombian Armed Conflict has lasted over 50 years and is Latin Americas’ longest continuous conflict. Over 6 million people have been displaced and hundreds of thousands killed in the fighting.

Negotiations to reach a peace agreement have been taking place in Havana, Cuba for four years.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos called it an “historic day for our country.”
