The Heat: South China Sea arbitration result

The Heat

TH-1 feature

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague has issued an arbitration result in a case unilaterally brought by the Philippines against China in 2013.

The issue involves a dispute between both countries over maritime jurisdiction in the South China Sea. China did not participate in the case stating it does not accept any solution involving a third-party settlement of its territorial sovereignty, its maritime rights and interests.

China has declared the award “null and void” and said it has “no binding force.” China favors bilateral talks as the appropriate way to resolve this issue.
