The Heat RIMPAC 2016 and THAAD deployment tension

For only the second time ever, China has sent a fleet of five ships to the Rim of the Pacific maritime exercises in Hawaii – the largest naval military exercises in the world. The war games are designed to improve combat coordination and military cooperation among more than 25 countries.

An advanced missile defense system, commonly called THAAD, is heading to South Korea, to counter threats from the DPRK. Neighboring China opposes the system because the advanced missile defense can reach into its territory. Russia is also opposed.
