The Heat: War against ISIL

According to a new report from the independent group IHS, ISIL has lost at least a quarter of its territory in Iraq and Syria in the past 18 months.

But even as it faces setbacks on the battlefield, ISIL supporters have taken to social media – encouraging “lone wolf” attacks in the West. In Nice, France a truck barreled through a crowd killing 84 people. In Normandy, two attackers burst into a church — slitting the throat of an elderly Catholic priest.

In Baghdad, at least 125 people were killed and another 150 injured after a car bomb exploded on a street crowded with shoppers. And in Kabul, suicide bombers killed 81 people in what’s been described as perhaps the deadliest attack in the Afghan capital since the civil war two decades ago. ISIL has claimed responsibility for all.
