It was a day Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto basked in patriotic glory. On the eve of Mexico’s Independence Day, the president led thousands in a historic call to arms, known as “El Grito,” a moment of patriotic fervor in a tough year for the president that appears to be getting even tougher.

Before the celebrations demonstrations, thousands of people marched in Mexico City demanding Pena Nieto’s resignation. He’s been criticized for mishandling the country’s drug war, the sluggish economy and his poor human rights record.

After inviting Donald Trump to the Mexican White House his approval rating sank. Even before Trump’s visit, Pena Nieto’s popularity had fallen below 25 percent. The worst poll numbers of any Mexican president in almost two decades.
