Hungary’s gov’t ramps up anti-refugee campaign ahead of referendum

World Today

In Hungary, the government has embarked on a relentless anti-refugee campaign ahead of Sunday’s referendum on EU migrant quotas.

The language has been so violent that Luxembourg’s foreign minister called for Hungary to be expelled from the union for stirring up hatred.

Across the country, public spaces and the media are inundated with the government’s messages.

Billboards portray asylum seekers and migrants as dangerous and urge people to vote against the European Union’s refugee relocation plan in Sunday’s referendum.

The campaign has cost millions, which critics said is a lot considering how few asylum seekers Hungary would be obliged to accept.

The government isn’t alone in plastering posters across the country.

The satirical Two-Tailed Dog party has launched a poster campaign of their own with slogans that mock the government’s messages, and also point out some sobering facts.
