Israel increase security to combat lone wolf attacks

Dozens of Israelis killed and more than 300 wounded in hundreds of lone wolf attacks. As Europe grapples with the phenomenon of operatives striking in civilian centers, Israel marks a year since a wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis started.

CCTV’s Stephanie Freid reported from The West Bank.

Two shootings, a knifing and six petrol bomb attacks – all at one checkpoint during the past year.

“This route is for traffic coming off the 443 Highway going to nearby (Palestinian) villages and Ramallah. You can see how close the road is to this highway – it’s mostly used by Israelis. The checkpoint is here to create a buffer between the Palestinian and Israeli populations so there won’t be any attacks on this side of the road,” said Guy Bouganim, reconnaissance commander of IDF.

The 443 Highway has been one of the hardest hit areas during the year’s uptick in lone wolf Palestinian against Israeli attacks. An estimated 30 percent of all assaults have happened in that location.

“It’s extremely hard to respond immediately when someone suddenly pulls a knife. And it’s knowing how to distance yourself, to respond, to overcome. And if needed, open fire,” said Peter Lerner, the IDF spokesperson.

Preventative measures include monitoring social media sites for incitement, installing hundreds of security cameras in cities and along highways and doubling police and military presence in sensitive areas.

The place where there used to be a benign gas station – certainly one without any military presence. It’s in the Palestinian territories. That peaceful aura changed within the past months with several attacks. One that resulted in the death of a soldier.

Now, patrols are stationed round-the-clock. Israeli military officials admitthere’s no hermetic seal against determined assailants operating in urban environments or along porous highways situated a few hundred meters from Palestinian villages.

The tactical aim of combined intelligence, monitoring and mobilizing is meant to cut casualty rates and stay one step ahead of attackers.
