Demolition of Calais camp poses uncertainty for refugees

Authorities in France have begun the long process of taking down the so-called “Jungle” migrant camp. Nearly 3,000 migrants have left their makeshift shelters on the outskirts of Calais. Officials said they hope to have all the others – some 4,000 more – out by Friday.

CCTV’s Dan Whitehead reports the story.

Late on Tuesday, official workers slowly started the process of dismantling the homes of migrants who’ve already been bused out of Calais.

There are no bulldozers yet, but as thousands leave, and the process is beginning to pick up pace.

Nearby a makeshift gym is being dismantled by the aid workers who built it.

While the demolition gets underway, unaccompanied minors are being housed in converted shipping containers inside the camp.

But charities are concerned about the impact such scenes of destruction may have on these children.

Those who’ve left wait patiently for an uncertain future. The migrants are filtered through to tents at the rear of this hanger. They only find out where the next chapter of their lives will start minutes before boarding buses.

Despite thousands having left, some insist on staying.
