It’s been an improbable journey. After announcing his run for U.S. president in June 2015 he was barely taken seriously. But after beating a crowded Republican field for his party’s nomination he drew enthusiastic crowds across the country.

And he has taken the fight to Hillary Clinton in a bare-knuckle, very personal campaign.

Whatever happens to Trump’s presidential ambitions on election night one thing is for sure. U.S. politics have changed forever here. He was a candidate who said exactly what he thought – not a politician – igniting crowds across the country. And his supporters love him for it.

“I really feel that he has us as his number one priority-the people if this country. It’s not his financial gain. What’s he going to gain from it…? He’s not going to gain financially from it, not at all. He’s there to really show us what we can do now. We can really make it better,” said Robert Franger, Trump Supporter from Massachusetts.

But time is running out for the Trump campaign. Can he close the gap after trailing Hillary Clinton for much of the race?

He’s fighting to the end-even in states like Michigan, which traditionally vote Democratic.

Whether Trump returns to his tower on Wednesday, or prepares to enter The White House, his campaign has shown a hunger in the U.S. for straight-talking, however vulgar, and a rejection of politics as usual. That legacy will likely survive this election and continue to shape U.S. politics.
