Anti-Trump protests continue for fourth day

World Today

Protests continue across the United States against President-elect Donald Trump. Despite calls from political leaders on all sides to come together.

CCTV America’s Nathan King has the latest.

For a fourth straight day, thousands of protestors took to the streets in many U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Atlanta against the incoming Donald Trump presidency. Chants of “Not my President” were shouted – American flags were burned- by many who fear policy changes by the president-elect.

In Portland, Oregon, police fired tear gas into a crowd of thousands. Portland is on edge, store windows are boarded up, and helicopters have been hovering, watching.

For more on the protests, CCTV America’s Phil Lavelle reports from Portland, Oregon.

‘Peaceful protest’ they shout. They’re loud, but controlled at this point.

Portland is hugely pro-democrat. But not entirely, one Trump supporter who shouted to the crowd is met with jeers and chants of “shame on you”.

“I’m here to protest against racism and bigotry,” anti-Trump protester Jorge Bautista Larrosa said. “Donald Trump ran the campaign based on hate, based on racism and that’s what we are against.”

And it’s not just in the states that voted against Trump.

Protesters shut down a major road in Iowa – a state that went heavily for Trump.

There have been a few rallies in support of the President-elect, but they have been dwarfed by anti-Trump forces.

More protests are planned in the coming days, weeks, and month including a “Million Woman March” in downtown Washington D.C. on Trump’s inauguration in January.

“I’m here because I’m in pain. I just want to express myself that, I just can’t believe that this happened,” protestor Janice Test said. “I mean it did happen, and I’ve heard a number of the commentaries that explain why, but never the less it’s very painful.”

After a divisive election, the U.S. people remain deeply split — despite calls from outgoing President Obama and Hillary Clinton to rally around President-elect Trump.

Many across this country show few signs of doing so, the bitter divide continuing long after all the votes have been counted.
