Young entrepreneurs create startups to combat Egyptian unemployment

Egypt is witnessing an increase in startup businesses, as more young people take up the challenge of creating their own employment.

They aren’t short of ideas – hundreds of entrepreneurs have showcased various innovations at the Rise Up summit.

CCTV’s Adel el Mahrouky reports.

Mohamed Tolba explains his apps to investors and users here at the Rise Up summit.

“We are facing some sort of an economic problem. So people will go to the small office or home businesses. One of them is cooking, currently in Egypt the home made food business is growing very fast. So we’re doing a platform for home chefs to be able to display their meals and menus, in a way that home food lovers can find them easily,” Tolba said.

Community based ideas are booming in Egypt and there are many other examples.

Besides creating apps inspired by such concepts, Tolba’s company has actually applied it to his business model.

While Cairo represents the business hub that attracts employers and employees from across the country, some startups, like Tolba’s, are reversing the migration by moving his business out of the capital to Assuit, a city 370 KM south Cairo.

So while the Rise Up summit gives startups the kick they need at the beginning of their foundation, some well established businesses too are keen to participate.

Nas Trends is another community driven brand. Founded in 2011, its mission is to turn folkloric sayings or modern slang into fashion.

They recruit designers, post their art on social media and the design with the most likes makes it to the production line.

It’s all about inspiration whether it’s from ideas or people.
