All smiles at the United Nations in October as women and girls around the world got a superhero in their corner, for the first time.

Lynda Carter, star of the global smash hit TV series “Wonder Woman,” was on hand to cheer her character’s new job.

However, doubters wasted no time: they were even in the room as the announcement was made, turning their backs in protest at Wonder Woman’s appearance.

More than 45,000 people signed an online petition calling for the selection of Wonder Woman as an ambassador to be re-considered, and a memo to the U.N.’s top brass pulled no punches.

Wonder Woman first appeared in 1941, a heroine fighting villains, rescuing victims and unearthing evil plots. In a statement, the firm behind the comic book character put a brave face on her demotion.

The U.N. reportedly said a public backlash is not why the Wonder Woman project is ending. A spokesman suggested the objective was to raise awareness and that was done.

But this isn’t the last New York or the world will hear from Wonder Woman-a comic book on the empowerment of women and girls is planned and a new full length Wonder Woman movie is slated for release next June.
