A female entrepreneur in the highlands of Guatemala

Americas Now

An indigenous woman is helping empower other women in Guatemala. She began a female farming cooperative and entered a marketplace dominated by men.

For this week’s Game Changer meet the founder of The Women’s Cooperative… Sandra Ciquin.

Due to the efforts of The Women’s Cooperative, prosperity has found its way to several communities in the Guatemalan highlands – along with better education and healthcare.
The group helps 450 families export their vegetables to the United States.

Sandra Ciquin is a Mayan-Indian woman who overcame racism and sex discrimination to become a leader in her own right.

By the way, all the members of Sandra’s cooperative are women. But they do employ men to help get the vegetables ready for export.
