The Heat: China, Japan & Republic of Korea trilateral relations

The Heat

Leaders from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea were supposed to meet this month in Tokyo as part of an annual trilateral summit between the neighboring nations. But, with the recent impeachment of ROK President Park Guen-hye, and questions over her ability to attend, the meeting was postponed until 2017.

However, all three countries share ongoing concerns over security issues, like the DPRK’s nuclear plans. Other areas for discussion include cooperation in areas like their economic links and trade.

CCTV’s Zhao Lingfeng reports from Beijing.

To discuss the trilateral relations between China, Japan and the Republic of Korea:

  • Yang Xiyu, senior fellow at the China Institute of International Studies.
  • Yoichi Shimatsu, journalist and former editor for the Japan Times.
  • Yonho Kim, senior researcher with the U.S. Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
