Mexican company introduces “digital detox” resorts

World Today

When it comes to work, being connected to the internet 24 hours a day has its benefits. But some people need help disconnecting when they’re on vacation.

One business thinks it has the answer. A so-called “digital detox” program was started at two of Mexico’s beach resorts, but it’s still struggling to get people to unplug.

Research by Nokia found the average person checks their phone 150 times every day – that’s once every 6.5 minutes.

According to the Pew Research Center, nearly half of adult Americans say they couldn’t live without their phone.

To counter the growing smartphone addiction, places like the Grand Velas Resorts hotel in Cancun, Mexico, have launched digital detox programs, offering folks the chance to switch off and chill out.

Families hand over their phones when they check in and are denied access to WiFi. Board games replace TV sets in their rooms? Instead, they take part in real-life experiences such as eco-tours and group bike rides.

Maybe it’s asking too much of people to pay more to hit the off button. Even in paradise, the urge to connect can be hard to ignore.
