As the year comes to an end there is a flurry of action regarding the war in Syria. There was a new year’s phone call between the presidents of Russia and Iran.

And the United Nations Security Council’s last meeting of 2016 endorses a roadmap for peace. But some rebels say they might walk away from this week’s fragile ceasefire if violations continue.

Turkey suggests UN and US could join negotiations

Turkey also plays a major role, as the main backer of the opposition. It has replaced the United States, which is sidelined.

However, Turkey’s Prime Minister says the U.S. led coalition can still participate in the talks, barring any groups involved in terrorism.
