Euro under pressure as support slips for the currency

Global Business

The euro has been under rising pressure in recent months- especially after the U.K. voted to the leave the European Union.

Now other members of the single currency bloc, are hinting that they’re unhappy as well.

Though hard to find, in Brussels there are still a few street-side stands that sell an iconic Belgian waffle for just one Euro.

Belgium is a country where there’s still strong support for the currency.

Here the Euro is seen as a currency that unites the continent.

But even here, where the major EU institutions are based, support for the Euro is starting to slip.

EU statistics show in 2015, 59 percent of Belgians thought the Euro currency is a good thing.

That number fell to 54 percent in 2016.

As so-called Euroscepticism-or anti EU sentiment-continues to rise and spread, 2017 could be a definitive year for the Euro.

Some economists fear it may not survive for another benchmark anniversary, with nationalism on the rise and weak banks scattered across Europe.
