The Heat: US election interventions

The Heat

the U.S. interventions in global electionsThe U.S. intervened in 81 elections worldwide from 1946 – 2000.

Late last year the United States expelled 35 Russian diplomats after accusing the Kremlin of interference in the recent U.S. presidential election.

And, although Russia denies allegations it hacked into the Democratic Party computers, Americans are outraged that a foreign power may have tried to undermine its electoral system.

But, across the globe, from Latin America, to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, the United States has its own history of intervention in the outcome of other countries’ elections. Add to that America’s involvement in coups, regime change and military intervention. We begin with this report from CGTN’s John Gilmore.

To discusses the press topic and its international impact, tonight’s panel includes:

  • Peter Kuznick, professor of American history at American University and co-author of “The Untold History of the United States” with Oliver Stone.
  • Alexander Nekrassov, former advisor to the Kremlin.
  • Carlos Alzugaray, former Cuban diplomat and educator.
  • Fred Fleitz, senior vice president at the Center for Security Policy.
