As a survivor of the 2005 London Underground terror attack, Australian Gill Hicks is a member of a tragic and exclusive club.

Hicks was on a busy commuter train when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb killing 26 passengers. The attack resulted in the loss of both of her legs below the knee.

“I ended up tourniqueting the tops of my legs, lowering my breathing rate, keeping myself upright and just focusing on my watch. So I wasn’t affected by what I was seeing,” explained Hicks.

London terrorist attack survivor Gill Hicks shares her remarkable story and the courage and determination it takes to triumph over tragedy.

Following the attack, Hicks left her successful career in architecture and design to work on projects and initiatives that are aimed both towards ending violent extremism and building sustainable models for peace.

In 2007, she founded M.A.D. for Peace, a non-profit organization that connects people worldwide and encourages us to think of “peace as a verb”—something she believes we have an individual responsibility to do on a daily basis.

“I see peace as a need for us to make an action,” explained Hicks. “It’s not passive in my view, it’s something that we really have to do and consciously be thinking about how we do this with each other every single day,” explained Hicks.
