World Today

The course of U.S. foreign policy is something addressed with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. In an exclusive interview with CGTN, he said the U.S. President should continue to seek a cooperative relationship with China. This month marks the 45th anniversary of the Shanghai Communiqué that paved the way for the U.S. and China to re-establish diplomatic relations.

CGTN’s Wang Guan reports.

In an exclusive CGTN interview, Kissinger said he believes President Donald Trump should seek a cooperative relationship with China.

Kissinger said at this moment, it is particularly important for U.S. and China to bear in mind the key principles in the Shanghai Communiqué and for the new White House and China to seek a cooperative relationship, not a confrontational one. Otherwise, the world will be divided, other countries will seek to exploit the U.S.-China divide.

Kissinger stressed the importance of the One China Policy, on which U.S.-China relations were built and formulated since day one. Kissinger said he believes eventually the One China Principle will be understood by Trump administration.

Kissinger again said he doesn’t believe confronts China on trade would be a good path.

Kissinger said he had the honor of meeting trump on several occasions and he has every hope that the objectives he described to President Trump will find a way into Trump’s policy towards China.
