The British Parliament is expected to give the go-ahead to begin formal Brexit talks with the European Union, beginning two years of difficult negotiations with bloc.

CGTN’s Richard Bestic explains.

Prime Minister Theresa May originally declared she wouldn’t let Parliament voice its opinions in the talks, thanks to authority granted by Royal Prerogative powers.

But that claim landed in the Britain’s Supreme Court, where 11 Supreme Court Judges said Parliament was integral to the country joining the EU and it needed to be involved in taking the country out.

After getting Parliamentary support, the government can get to the task of completing its EU exit. However, the process could take years of difficult talks before possibly another 10 years before establishing what kind of relationship the U.K. wants with its former trading partner.
