Global Business

Manchester United football club, has announced its second quarter earnings as the club grows on the New York Stock Exchange.

CGTN’s John Terrett reports.

The top flight English Premier League club is one of the best known in the world.

Great players including Bobby Charlton, George Best and David Beckham and managers like Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson helped ensure Manchester United was compelling to watch on the field.

An American sports team owner Malcolm Glazer purchased the club in 2005, bringing with him a sense of business acumen not seen before at the club’s stadium Old Trafford.

The Glazer family’s still involved in the running of the club, but today Manchester United is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. When it debuted in 2012, Forbes valued it at $2.3 billion, making it the most valuable sports franchise in the world ahead of Real Madric and the New York Yankees.

The money comes in through sponsorship, TV rights, jersey sales and multiple other revenue streams.
