Residents near Oroville Dam return home as crews work to clean spillways

World Today

Crews in northern California are rushing to fix two spillways of the Oroville Dam, before new storms hit.

CGTN’S Mark Niu reports.

The evacuation of nearly 200,000 people who live close to Oroville Dam has been lifted.

Crew members continue to work around the clock, hauling bags of boulders and dropped in to help repair an eroding emergency spillway.

Authorities have determined that enough progress has been made to reduce the evacuation order to an evacuation warning so that people can return to their homes and resume business.

At the West Sacramento Sikh Temple, around 200 people sought out shelter and food, including families who aren’t Sikh. Many families have already decided to return home, while others continue to wait for word that it’s all clear and safe to head back.

Now, families like these can head back to their houses, but not before giving thanks to those who have made them already feel as close to home as possible.
