China continues investments in Ecuador's economy

China’s investment in Ecuador has grown over the past decade, becoming the country’s major creditor and an important investor.

After the devastating earthquake, the country has been pouring more money into helping repair the country.

CGTN’s Dan Collyns reports.

China has also provided financing to help build infrastructure, energy generation, and for the oil and mining sectors. That means big debts for Ecuador under conditions, said analysts, about which there’s little public information. According to El Universal news agency, since 2008, Ecuador has officially borrowed at least $9 billion from China.

Presidential candidates pledge to further open Ecuador’s economy to foreign investment, so if elected that trend could increase.

Whoever takes office in May, China will continue to play a big role in Ecuador’s economy, just how big is yet to be decided.
