New York Toy Fair showcases Barbie, Batman

New York’s annual Toy Fair is in full swing. Buyers and the media are getting a first look at the latest toys from giants like Mattel and Lego and from smaller companies that can make a fortune with a hit.

CGTN’s Karina Huber reports.

The annual Toy Fair showcases the latest offerings of over a thousand toy companies large and small. Movie related toys are this year’s biggest trends. Lego has 13 sets for the new Batman film, and some for the upcoming Cars 3 movie. Lego’s Boost – a robotics program that lets you interact with a hissing and purring cat – is expected to be a hit.

Tech is always a hot theme at the New York Toy Fair, but the Toy Industry Association said there is also strong demand for classic toys like puzzles, games and dolls.

“I think that families really want the opportunity to disconnect from their devices and sit down and just connect over games and puzzles and face to face play,”Kristin Morency Goldman, spokesperson for the Toy Industry Association, said,

The global toy industry rakes in revenues hovering around $84 billion per year. Its biggest market is the United States but the vast majority of the toys Americans consume are manufactured abroad with China being the industry’s biggest exporter accounting for almost $43 billion worth of toys.
