The Heat: 45th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique

Richard Nixon ended his historic visit to China 45 years ago with the Shanghai Communique, which opened the doors for modern China-U.S. relations. That document outlined the areas of cooperation between China and the U.S. and highlighted respect for differences. It laid a strong foundation for a full establishment of ties between the two countries just a few years later.

CGTN’s Owen Fairclough takes a look back at the historic visit that took place 45 years ago.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was part of the U.S. delegation to China in 1972 – he was National Security Adviser under President Nixon and helped craft the Shanghai Communique with his Chinese counterparts.

CGTN’s Wang Guan sat down with Dr. Kissinger to talk about the 45th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique and the current state of China-U.S. affairs.
