Trump’s policy promises cause fear along the US-Mexico border

World Today

U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies are likely to have a major impact is along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump has said he will build a wall.

He also promises to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

CGTN’s Franc Contreras reports.

Many immigrants are worried about U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to intensify a crack-down on undocumented immigrants. Some are anxious about being deported.

Another issue that causes migrants worry along the Mexican side of the border is Trump’s insistence on building a wall. That’s less of a concern in Tijuana because the barrier has been in place for decades. People in Tijuana believe migration policies under President Trump are increasingly anti-Mexican.

Trump has authorized U.S. agents to step-up their hunt for millions of people in the U.S. without immigration papers, many of them Mexican.

Trump also vows to slap heavy border taxes on Mexican products entering the United States. Mexico’s Economy Minister has warned that his country will break off NAFTA negotiations if Trump keeps that promise.

Mexico has indicated its desire to increase commerce with other nations, including China. China is Mexico’s second biggest trading partner after the U.S. This could take years to achieve.
