A community enlists an environmentalist to combat pollution in Guatemala

Americas Now

Lake Atitlan, in Guatemala’s highlands is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It’s also the deepest lake in Central America. Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to visit every year.

But, Lake Atitlan is suffering an environmental crisis with increased contamination. A growing population has caused a problem with pollution.

One of the twelve towns on its shores, however, is trying to make a difference. San Pedro La Laguna has banned the use of Styrofoam and plastic which has decreased the levels of pollution in the lake.

This week’s Game Changer on “Americas Now” is working closely with the town to save it. Meet environmental expert, Juan Alvarado.
