Some major markets have now resumed importing Brazilian meat while many have still banned Brazilian meat, over claims the products were tainted.

Only 21 of Brazil’s 5,000 meat producers are under investigation.

The tainted meat scandal put a big dent in Brazil’s international trade. After the story broke sales of Brazilian beef plunged nearly 40 percent.

However, Brazil’s Association of Beef Exporters hopes sales will rebound in time to still hit targets for this year.

Two of the biggest importers, China and Egypt, banned Brazilian meat, but have already reversed their decisions. The trend now seems to be bans only against the 21 meatpackers under investigation. However, in the United States there’s pressure from local producers for tougher action.

It took decades for Brazil to build its reputation as a world leader in meat production, and less than a week to damage that reputation. The question now is how long will it take Brazil’s $14 billion meat industry to fully recover
