France's Chinese community reacts to killing of man by police

Authorities in France have begun an investigation into the death of a Chinese national killed by Paris police.

Conflicting reports range from self-defense, to cold-blooded killing, while the man’s family said it all happened in a matter of seconds.

The conflicting accounts have frustrated many in France’s Chinese community. In the days after Liu’s death grief and anger have gone hand in hand.

Community leaders said many Chinese people feel isolated in France and that they have no voice.

Tamara Liu points to the coverage of this story by French media as an example.

“The treatment by the media has made us question ourselves a lot. We get the impression that the whole of French society has risen up again us, the small people who dont speak French very well, who don’t have any other means. This is where the debate is being distorted, and it’s also distorting our feelings,”Liu said.

The incident prompted the Chinese government to take the unusual step of intervening. The Foreign Ministry has lodged an official complaint and urged the French authorities to get to the bottom of this quickly.

An investigation is underway and a lawyer for Liu’s family says they have faith in the investigating authorities and the judicial process.
