How a journey across the Andes celebrates Latin American independence

One of the most iconic events in the South American independence wars is the Andes Crossing.

Two hundred years ago, General Jose San Martin led an army of over 4,000 men across the mountains, from Argentina to Chile. They caught the Spanish by surprise and freed Chile, then continued north to liberate Peru.

Attaining the region’s independence was the ultimate aim of the crossing and the feat is taught as one of the great moments in Argentina’s history.

To mark the anniversary, a group of over 200 people recreated the historic journey on mules.

Americas Now correspondent Joel Richards was part of the expedition.
