Proposals for Mexico-US Border wall pour in amid controversy

Border wall

As construction companies offer proposals for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, some have requested the right to carry firearms. They fear violent protests.

CGTN’s Franc Contreras reports.

For more than three decades, the United States has been building barriers along its border with Mexico. New border wall construction proposals have started coming in

One proposal would use see-through mesh called a Wire Wall, which the proposing company said is nearly impossible to cut or climb. Other proposals would use drones to monitor the border. Another would use the barrier to store nuclear waste as a way of deterring would-be border jumpers.

A new report found at least two construction firms have requested the right to use firearms in case protests turn hostile.

Mexican officials recently built a small-scale border wall inside their own territory. Friendship Park is surrounded by that Mexican-built barrier. Local Chinese organizations built a kiosk.

At this part of Mexico-U.S. border, a metal barrier is the only thing separating both nations, and getting to the other side is as simple as stepping over. It’s just one example of how far away the United States actually is from sealing off the entire more than 3,000 kilometer border with Mexico.
