World Economic Forum Latin America wraps up in Argentina

The World Economic Forum-Latin America, has wrapped in Buenos Aires.

This is the first time Argentina has hosted a major economic event, in the last decade, and the cuontry’s getting ready to host the G20 summit next year.

It’s a clear message that Latin America’s second biggest economy, is making a return to the global financial stage, after exiting from recession last month.

CGTN’s Joel Richards reports.

After 12 years of protectionist economic policies under predecessor Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, President Mauricio Macri has opened up and shaken the Argentine economy.

But with the reforms, there are tensions. Coinciding with the forum, unions called the first national strike against the government. It was a planned protest against high inflation and tariff hikes that some view as favoring powerful economic sectors over workers interests.

While Argentina wrestles with finding a balance between reforming its economy while attending social demands, the region is also debating the direction it will take to ensure future inclusive economic growth. Some see an opportunity to merge and strengthen regional economic blocs.

Balancing out economic growth and fostering greater social inclusion remains the debate and the challenge for this region.
