Africa’s hair care industry grows by billions

Global Business

Nigeria is Africa’s fastest growing market for human and synthetic hair- this preference is driving the industry in Africa’s most populous nation.

By some estimates African women are spending up to $6 billion on hair imports mostly from India and South America.

CGTN’s Kelechi Emekalam reports.

Nigeria, South Africa and Cameroon top the list of the continent’s biggest hair markets.

In Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, natural hair-dos are no longer trending; instead, synthetic and human hair weaves, wigs and extensions are most sought after.

For most of the women, it is a quest not just for beauty, but confidence, too.

The search for beauty and confidence has given rise to a serious business-Nigerian women spend millions of dollars annually on imported human hair. That is why salons are some of the most competitive business to invest in, with thousands of salons are opening all over the country.

The years to come are only expected to bring greater growth to the sector – boosted by continued urbanization and a growing middle class. But perhaps the best predictor of the sector’s future health may be found in the growth of Nigeria’s youth population and an ever-expanding pool of young women – out to look their best.
