In South Africa, the month of April has seen some of the largest protests since the anti-apartheid struggle.

A string of scandals that involve President Jacob Zuma has united political opponents and civic rights groups with sharply different ideologies to unite.

Even on April 12, the day that marked the president’s 75th birthday, police estimated 30,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Pretoria, the capital city. But organizers said the number of demonstrators was higher.

The large crowd gathered at a central square and marched peacefully to the Union buildings, where Zuma’s offices are located.

Here are some of the scandals that are weakening the legacy of the African National Congress:

Ndileka Mandela, the grandchild of Nelson Mandela, has publicly criticized the party, saying the party no longer represents the values her grandfather voted for. She said she will not vote for her grandfather’s party.

The ANC has governed South Africa for more than 23 years and controls eight of the country’s nine provinces.
