U.S. President Donald Trump signaled his willingness to make concessions on trade with China if Beijing can get Pyongyang to back off its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Trump is making resolving the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula his first foreign policy test. Trump and his National Security Advisor have refused to take military options off the table.

Beijing wants to coax the parties back to negotiations – largely through economic pressure.

Discussions are underway at the United Nations for additional sanctions against Pyongyang.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi continues to encourage the U.S. to end its military exercises in the region.

In the meantime, in a reversal from his campaign rhetoric, Trump said he’s already made economic concessions to Beijing on currency and is willing to do the same for trade, all in hopes of a resolution.
