The African Film Festival has returned to New York. The festival showcases movies from African communities around the globe. The theme this year is “revolution and change.”

The New York African Film Festival is in its 24th year, with the aim to bring films from the entire African diaspora to Manhattan audiences.

This year’s theme, ‘The People’s Revolution,’ showcases work from 25 countries, including a screening of the 1988 anti-apartheid movie ‘Mapantsula’. Like many of this year’s films, it shows Africans engaged in struggle and protest.

The festival’s founder, Mahen Bonetti, felt it resonated today more than ever.

“We managed without design, just by the program we created, we realized that all the filmmakers of the same generation are speaking to each other. They’re creating a new cinema language, or they’re pushing the needle further, about a discussion that started 50 years ago about African people of African descent,” Bonetti said.

There’s an incredible array of work at this year’s festival with 25 feature-films and 36 shorts.
