What is triple talaq and how can three words lead to divorce?

World Today

Could a marriage be officially over with three short words? That is being considered now in India with the debate surrounding “triple talaq.”

The word “talaq” literally means divorce in Arabic.

Under current Indian law, if a man says “talaq” three times to his wife, they are considered lawfully divorced.

This has left many women homeless and without resources following the impersonal end to the marriage.

Some men even deliver the “triple talaq” through social media: there are examples of it being delivered by WhatsApp, text message, or Facebook.

India’s top court is now examining whether to uphold the practice.
