Washington finally has a new top trade negotiator. Robert Lighthizer was sworn in as the U.S. Trade Representative Monday afternoon at the White House.

“President Donald Trump’s Cabinet is finally complete,” said U.S Vice President Mike Pence, after swearing in Lighthizer.

According to a press release, Ambassador Lighthizer practiced international trade law for more than 30 years. He served as Deputy USTR under U.S. President Ronald Reagan where he “negotiated over two dozen bilateral international agreements.” He also served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Lighthizer was a key player in Reagan’s tax major tax reform effort in 1981.

“I’m honored for the opportunity to serve President Trump and Vice President Pence by working for fair and free trade that benefits all Americans,” said Ambassador Lighthizer via statement. “By expanding export market access through negotiating good trade deals and enforcing U.S. trade laws, we can raise wages and help level the playing field for American workers, farmers, ranchers, and job-creators.”

The White House says Lighthizer begins his first day on the job, Tuesday, with a series of meetings on Capitol Hill. On Thursday, Lighthizer will travel to Vietnam for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
