UN stands firm on climate change despite US plans to withdraw

At the United Nations in New York, they’re determined the Paris Accord won’t die despite the U.S. withdrawal.

CGTN’s John Terrett reports.

The U.N. wheels turn slowly and almost 24 hours after President Trump yanked America away from the Paris Accord the first words, on live TV from a spokesperson.

One island nation that fears for its future is Fiji, an archipelago of 300 islands in the South Pacific, climate change is not new to them.

“We have felt it fifty years ago we have been telling the world about the problems of the Pacific countries there’s a lot of islands that are basically coral islands they’re sinking a lot of villages are disappearing from the surface of the earth so we’re very aware of the issues of climate change,” Semi Koroilavesau, the Fiji Minister of Fisheries said.

President Trump feels President Obama was tricked by other nations into spending too many U.S. dollars and giving up too much control over the Paris Accord. In Fiji, they’re determined the accord will survive.

The U.N. is in the city of New York which lit key municipal buildings in green on Thursday in support of Paris. This as American cites, states and companies are preparing to submit a plan to the U.N. pledging to honor greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris terms anyway.
