Tango’s global anthem turns 100 years old

It doesn’t take more than a few notes for most people to recognize one of the most memorable tango songs ever written. It’s called La Cumparsita, and all around the world,  celebrations have been taking place to commemorate its 100th year.

The tune’s composer, Gerardo Matos Rodriguez of Uruguay, wrote it as a teenager, sold it, and then spent much of his life trying to win back the rights to the song, after it became world-renowned.

Correspondent Joel Richards explored the complicated history, but also the magic, of the song that has mesmerized tango fans across the world.
