This month marks LGBT Pride Month, which celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender pride. The month also commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots, which was a major tipping point for the gay rights movement in the United States.

The incident took place at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village in New York City. In the morning of June 28, 1969, police raided the inn because it was serving liquor without a license. The crowd threw bottles at officers when they forced drag queens into a police van. The riot reached neighboring streets, and police called for backup. After the riot, gay, lesbian and bisexual civil rights demonstrations took place in New York and was one of the first major demonstration for homosexual rights.

Today, Pride parades are celebrated across the United States and around the world.
