What do we know about the US Navy ship collision?

According to the U.S. Navy, three sailors sustained serious injuries in the collision, including the ship’s commander. They were evacuated to a hospital by helicopter. They are awake and under medical observation. Other sailors, however, suffered less serious injuries. No injuries have been reported on the container ship.

Both ships are now safely back in port. But what do we know about how this collision happened?
